THE Adams Oshiomole-led government in Nigeria’s mid-western state of Edo is set to carry out the state’s 5th
execution under the incumbent government’s watch.
This comes barely four days after four executions were carried in the same state, an act that generated reactions locally and in the international arena.
The convict, Thankgod Eboh, had won a respite from being executed by firing squad, after he was tried by a military tribunal.
Edo State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Henry Idahagbon, had as soon as logistics were put in place, Ebohs would be executed too.
Meanwhile, some civil society organisations yesterday urged Governor Adams Oshiomhole to halt further action in signing execution warrant on convicted prisoners and urged the state government to join the global call for the abolition of death penalty.
The African Network for Environment and Economic Justice, Gani Fawehimi Movement for Good Governance, Conference of Non- Governmental Organizations, Coalition of Edo Youth Organization, South-South Youth League, are a few of the organizations who have so far reacted.
The organizations visited the state and had an audience with Attorney-General Idahagbon, in Benin City, to register their opposition to death penalty in Nigeria’s statutes.
