Team Delta, the contingent of athletes representing Delta State at the 18th National Sports Festival in Lagos, tagged Eko 2012, got a further boost when the speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, Rt Hon Victor Ocheifnse doled out a princely two million naira as his personal contribution to the state contingent.
Making the donation over the weekend shortly before the team’s departure for Lagos, the legislator said that the gesture is his small contribution to ensuring that Delta State made appreciable impact by emerging the overall winners as in four of six previous editions of the National Sports Festival since the Bauchi 2000 edition.
He further urged the contingent to always compete fairly but focused on the agenda of being the first amongst equals, adding that the state has been synonymous with excellence in sports and as such, should show the stuff champions are made, prominent amongst which is being good ambassadors of the state.
While receiving the cheque, the chairman of the Delta State Sports Commission, Mr. Amaju Melvin Pinnick expressed profound gratitude to the speaker for the laudable gesture, which is invariably, the necessary tonic for the team to excel at the festival.
He further said that the donation attests to the overwhelming confidence Deltans have in the squad, considering the fact that the legislature represents the interest of the polity.
Mr Amaju therefore pledged to ensure that the state will emerge overall winners at the fiesta.
