El-Rufai Wins Human Rights Suit Against Government, Wins N1m Compensation

A Federal High Court sitting in Abuja has ordered the Nigerian government to pay its former Federal Capital Territory Minister, Mr. Nasir el-Rufai, the sum of one million naira in damages for refusing to renew his international passport in 2009.

Justice Kafarti, granting the prayers of el-Rufai in an ex-parte motion, said that the former official of the Nigerian government had his fundamental human rights abridged as the government did not provide any reason for refusing to renew his passport. He also ordered the document released.
