Electrical Explosion Kills One Person in Lagos

AT LEAST one person was confirmed dead in a Monday explosion in Lagos.

According to eyewitnesses, the victim was the leader of Sand Diggers Association, Amuwo-Odofin, who was killed by the explosion under the bridge linking Festac Town and Festac Extension.

“The victim was the Chairman of the sand diggers association; members of the association sell sand under the link bridge.

“An explosive was planted close to where he usually seats; the explosion occurred at about noon, killing the man on the spot and injuring one other.

“Some arrests have been made and the area is now calm while the police from the Anti-Bomb squad are investigating the materials found at the scene,’’ a source told NAN.

The Commissioner of police in Lagos, Mr Umar Manko, who confirmed the explosion, however, told journalists that it was caused by an electrical fault that occurred under the bridge.

“The explosion was not a bomb as people claimed; it was not an explosive devise targeted by Boko Haram or any terror group at people in Lagos.

“It was caused by an electrical fault and one person died in the explosion,’’ Manko said.

He urged people in Lagos to go about their normal businesses, assuring them of their safety.

The Commissioner said that the command was investigating the incident.
