Electricity Tariff Increase Effective From April— DISCOs

By Dayo Omoogun The new electricity tarriffs are to come into effect from April 1, 2020 and not January 1, 2020 as erroneously reported in some sections of the media. This clarification is contained in a statement made available to the media by the Association of Nigerian Electricity Distributors(ANED), the umbrella body of Distribution Companies( DISCOs) in Nigeria,on Monday. The Association explained that the primary regulator of the electricity industry in the country, Nigeria Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC),announced the upward review in its latest Multi- Year Tariff Order (MYTO)adding that the “The tariffs anticipate changes in the Currency Exchange rates between the United States and Nigeria, changes in the rate of Inflation and Gas prices.” The statement emphasised that “The Tariffs shall remain the same as they presently are (i.e. 2015 levels) until April 01, 2020 when there will be a slight increment to cater for tariff shortfalls which shall be gradually passed on to the consumer until this is fully completed by the end of 2021.”
