..in altercation with the officers of the correctional service
A dramatic altercation occurred at the Federal High Court in Lagos between operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) and officials of the Nigeria Correctional Service (NCS) over the custody of the suspended Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor, Godwin Emefiele.
Emefiele had been arraigned by the Federal Ministry of Justice on charges of illegal possession of firearms and ammunition. He pleaded “not guilty” and was subsequently granted bail in the sum of N20m, with one surety.
As Emefiele’s legal team worked towards satisfying the bail conditions, a heated dispute ensued between the hooded DSS operatives and the NCS within the court premises regarding who should take custody of the embattled CBN governor.
The DSS are inisisting that Emefiele remains in their custody tendering a court order which it says gives them the power to continue to detain Emefiele. This is after the court had ordered for his bail.
A lawyer in an interview with pressmen said President Tinubu has started his government on impunity and lawlessness. He urged the president to fire the DSS DG and that he is not above the law and shouldn’t be allowed to defy court orders.
” President Tinubu, you have started your government on a very wrong note. This is impunity and lawlessness”
“I urge you to fire the DSS boss , he is going to destroy the image of your government”
As at the filing of the reports, News Spec obelserved that the men of the secret service were still in the court premises fully kitted with rifles and in mask.
