Ethiopia fined by CAF Following Fan Misbehaviour in Nelspruit

The Caf Disciplinary Board decided to sanction a financial fine of $10,000 on Ethiopia for Monday’s incident against

defending champions Zambia. $5000 of the amount is suspended if Ethiopia do not repeat the offense by the end of the 2013 Afcon.

The first half of the encounter was marred by an on-field decision, which sparked poor behaviour from the visiting Ethiopian fans at the Mbombela Stadium.

In the 31st minute of the match poor defending from Ethiopia allowed Chisamba Lungu to break through but under pressure from goalkeeper Tassew, he lobbed wide. The pair clattered into each other with the keeper leading into the professional foul with his studs up in a dangerous fashion.

Both players then fell to the ground and medical assistance soon arrived. The keeper stayed down for some time, with the Gabonese referee waiting for him to make his recovery before showing him a red card. The player was helped off the pitch with a stretcher, and as he was lifted off the ground, the ref showed him his marching orders.

In response to that decision, the numerous Ethiopian fans in the stadium began booing the referee and throwing objects such as mini flags, vuvuzelas and other small items onto the pitch. The official was forced to wait for the fans to calm down before clearing the outskirts of the pitch and restarting the match, which eventually finished as a 1-1 draw.
