THE Peoples Democratic Party in Ekiti State is facing accusations of irresponsible politicking over alleged attempts at using a tragic auto crash that almost claimed the life of an Action Congress of Nigeria lawmaker on Thursday for political advantage.
According to local eyewitness at the scene of the fatal accident in Ilasa-Ekiti said an oncoming vehicle veered into the lane of Rep. Daramola, who was travelling on his way from Abuja to his home state of Ekiti.
“It was apparent that something, somehow, influenced the driver of the vehicle driving on the other lane to make a dangerous detour to the lane leading to the south,” said an aide to the lawmaker who was present in the car with him.
However, the PDP information machinery, apparently seeking to make a cheap political capital out of the incident, said that Mr. Daramola was guilty of ‘vehicular homicide’, and running away from the scene of the accident.
The party has blitzed into town calling for his arrest and prosecution.
Village folks around the scene of the crash however said that politicians were acting irresponsibly by falsifying the facts of the unfortunate event.
An aide of Rep. Daramola who spoke to sharpedgenews.com described the statement credited to Lere Olayinka, a spokesman to Mr. Segun Oni, chairman of the southwest PDP, as a regrettable figment of his imagination, filled with half-truth regarding the accident.
“The accident happened at Ilasa Ekiti around 7.30 pm last night on our way from Abuja, we had the right of way to the right, while the fellow had right of way to the left. And! All of a sudden, the fellow left his lane completely and ran into our vehicle, hitting us in a head-on collision.”
“The Policemen who came to the accident scene took him to the hospital, and unfortunately he died on the way, with the assistance of the residents of the area we were taken to the hospital in Ado Ekiti to get treatment for injuries sustained.”
He further stated that the statement of PDP Ekiti on this accident matter was morbidly incredible. According to him, “the lawmaker escaped death by the whiskers; it is highly regrettable that the PDP can fabricate such statement, considering that it involved the loss of life of a human being.”
“Contrary to the heinous statement of Lere Olayinka that we were over speeding, and that we ran away from the scene for fear of attack by angry Ilasa-Ekiti residents, it was the people at the scene that came to our aid, they gathered our stuff, and stopped another vehicle that conveyed us to Ado Ekiti where we received medical attention.
“It is unfortunate that contrary to what he presents to the public and his comical attempt to make propaganda out of this situation, Honorable Daramola is kind and respecter of human being and will never abandon anyone to die, not even his enemies.”
Other eye witnesses have also confirmed to the online media partners with sharpedgenews.com that the accident occurred as a result of a head-on collision, and that both vehicle occupants were rushed to Ado Ekiti by sympathizers at the scene.
Efforts to speak with the lawmaker proved abortive as we were informed by the aide that he is currently traumatized by the accident and the loss of life and will give his own account after he recovers from the shock.
