The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) NGO Correctional Parliament has inaugurated its first Executive members to enhance the development of correctional service and good service delivery the country.
The newly inaugurated members are Dr. Mohammed Audu, as Speaker, William Bashiru, Asst. Speaker Dr. Valda Itunu Martins, Secretary, Gbade Inaolaji-Tella, Assistant secretary, Roz Ben- Okgbue, Financial secretary, Barr Ogonna Okeke, Legal Adviser.
Also, Barr. Madueke Kosisochukwu Getrude, Assistant legal Adviser, Mr. Shedrach Oka.
Chief Whip, Eze Chinedu, Assistant chief whip, ASC Adikwu Owoicho, Welfare and Logistics, Pst. ( Barr) Mrs Boluwade Folake B Treasurer, Pastor (Engr.) F. O. Akowe, Asst. P.R.O, Bar Ogechi Ogu- Asst PRO.
Speaking at the inauguration, the speaker of the group, Dr Mohammed Audu, said the vision of the members is aimed to ensure inmates are properly rehabilitated through training, psychotherapy and vocational skill development.
Dr Mohammed said the parliament will focus on improving standard of living for the inmates, security and healthcare delivery, welfare, psycho-social, behavioral modification, social-economic empowerment programs, interdisciplinary training for wardens, to foster an enviable Correctional Service worthy of global best practices.
According to him, the current challenges facing the correctional service today is traceable to the breakdown of value system in the society stemming from family, school, community and the declining of values from the home front, schools and community.
“I am confident that, unified together, we will find ways to not only meet the high expectations we have for ourselves as a parliament, but exceed those our community and our world have for us. Because if not us, then who will renew and rebuild a coordinated and legislate the function of the NGO system in the correctional facility.
“Our efforts will help reimagin government policies and programs that are meant to better the lives of the staff and inmates in our national facility With resilience and renewal, we can weather the winds of positive impact on our mission as a parliament,” he said.
The Assistance Controller General, Dr Abdulrahaman Maiyaki, while congratulating the inaugurated members also tasked them to leave up to expectations and use their positions for the development of the service.
The ACG said the idea is to create a forum and bring the NGOs together to interface as to know the challenges the inmates are facing and find lasting solution to them.
The Controller of Corrections, FCT Command, Ibrahim N Idris Esq, also tasked the inaugurated members to be dedicated in discharging their duties to help reposition the correctional service for National development of the country. (NAN)
