Former Governor Daniel Files N500m Defamation Lawsuit against Successor

FOR what he described as “persistent character assassination” of his person, former governor Gbenga Daniel of Ogun State took incumbent Governor Ibikunle Amosun and some of his aides to court on Thursday.

The case was filed before an Ogun State High Court on Thursday where two separate suits were filed by his counsel, Dr. Ope Banwo. Also joined in the suit by Daniel against Amosun and his aides are some of Governor Daniels former commissioners.

Specifically, the claimants include the former governor, Dr. Isiaq Salako, Mr. Raheem Ajayi, Mr. Sina Kawonise, Mrs. Toni Soboyejo, Mr. Ifekayode Akinbode and Mr. Deji Kalejaiye.

Names as respondents in the suit are Governor Ibikunle Amosun, along with his commissioners for Finance and Information, Mr. Yusuf Olaniyonu and Kemi Adeosun, respectively.

Mr. Daniel and his aggrieved former cabinent members are alleging defamatory statements by the incumbent Governor Amosun and his commissioners in which the latter had labeled the former governor and his cabinet members as fraudulent.

“The suit was borne out of the need to seek redress in the court of law as it concerns the persistent character assassination of my client, Gbenga Daniel. At the end of the day, we hope that the judiciary will do justice to the suit that has been brought before it,” said Mr. Daniel’s counsel, Mr. Banwo, in filing the suit, whose hearing date is yet to be set.
