Forum seeks harmonisation of condition of service for LG workers

The Forum of Local Government Heads of Administration in Nigeria, has called on President Bola Tinubu, to harmonise the condition of service for its members.

Mr Abdulrahaman Marafa, President of the forum, made the call during an executive meeting on Wednesday in Abuja.

He said that it was necessary for the Tinubu-led administration to resolve issues of discrepancies in the salary structure, designation and condition of service for its members.

According to him, the uniformity in the salary and designation, would put to an end the feelings of bias and unfair preference in some quarters.

“There is every need for uniformity in salary and designation of our members, this is because in some states, they are called Director, Personnel Management, while some call it Head of Administration or Director of Administration.

“It ought to be the same all over as their salaries are not also the same.

“What is obtainable in State A should be the same in State B and C, there should be the same salary structure in all the 774 local governments in the country.

“We are appealing to the government to have a policy in place that harmonises the condition of service,” he said.

Marafa explained that as the third tier of government, local government administrations should be accorded the desired treatment.

He added that as the engine room where programmes and policies relating to people at the grassroots emanate from, it was important to prioritize their affairs.

For his part, Mr Attahiru Yakubu, Head of Administration, Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC) said that FCT area councils, are committed to the development of rural areas in the territory.

He added that the FCT area councils would continue to appeal to the federal government to fulfill the demands of the forum, as they chart a course for better and developed local government areas.
