Freak Rainstorm in Ibadan Leaves Residents Worried

IBADAN residents were put in disarray in the early hours of Monday when a sudden heavy downpour which caused a lot of havoc started.

It was reported that the rain caused immense damage to many properties within the metropolis

The rain storm, which took many residents unaware, blew away the roof tops of many private and public buildings.

Among structures affected by the rain storm were an orphanage on the Ibadan-Lagos Expressway belonging to Sen. Bode Olajumoke, the Federal High Court at Iyana Adeoyo, Lead City University and many private houses at Fodacis area of the metropolis.

Other structures affected by the rain storm were PHCN installations, the overhead bridge linking Ibadan -Lagos Expressway with Challenge area of the city and the imposing bill board at Challenge belonging to Globacom, a telecom operator.

Other areas of the metropolis affected by the rainstorm included Iwo road, Felele, Alakia, Odo Ona Kekere and Academy areas.

Mr. Akande Akinyemi, a resident, said that the occurrence of the incident in the wee hours of the morning may have reduced the casualty figure.

‘‘The effect of the rain storm will have been much if it had occurred when residents were going about their normal duties,’’ he said.

Mr. Joseph Asekun, a trader at Dugbe Market, said the extent of the damage caused by the rain storm was enormous, saying ‘‘we are yet to get the details of the effect of the incident.’’

Mr. Jide Oyenuga, the Public Affairs Manager of Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company, said that the rain storm had adversely affected the supply of power to some parts of Ibadan.

‘‘The company is yet to get details of the damage done to its installations, but all I know is that our technical workers are on the field trying to repair the affected cables,’’ he said.
