DR. HAROLD Demuren, the director-general of Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority, has disclosed that fourteen families of the victims of the Dana aircraft which crashed at Iju Isaga, a suburb of Lagos last June have received full compensation of $100,000 as stipulated by the International Civil Aviation Organisation regulation.
The announcement was made on Friday while briefing newsmen at the agency’s annex at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Ikeja.
Represented by Dr. Teresa Bassey, the aviation authority’s head of aeromedicals department, Demuren said the checks for the initial payment of 30,000 dollars compensation had been presented to the families of 85 victims.
“This included 23 out of 53 families that had gone to court. “In order for the families to collect the remaining 70,000 dollars compensation, the airline’s reinsurance Company requires letters of administration from them,” he said.
Demuen said that the families of 12 victims’ were yet to submit any documentation to Dana Airline, while the families of two are yet to submit full documentation. The DG said that documentation for 24 victims was awaiting authentication by the insurers while letters of administration (LOA) for families of 48 victims were still being awaited.
Issues of multiple claims are also being carefully handled,” he said. On those who lost their properties on the ground to the crash, the Demuren said that their case was being evaluated to ascertain the amount to be paid to them.
