ONE man was on Thursday shot dead by gunmen dressed in police uniforms, while several others were injured at Daleko Bridge, Mushin area of Lagos.
At least one of the victims of the shooting, identified as Mr. Korie, was a foreigner. Korie, who was shot while driving in a Toyota Highlander jeep, later died on the way to the hospital.
Police spokeswoman Ngozi Braide said it was unclear if the yet-to-be identified gunmen were hired assassins in police uniform or not, as they did not drive away the victim’s vehicle.
She also said that seven suspects had been arrested over the killing, and that they were being detained at the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) office for further investigations.
“At about 7:00 a.m., the Area Commander, Area“D” Mushin, received a distress call that there was a shooting incident around Daleko Bridge, Mushin.
“Some policemen were immediately dispatched to the area but on their arrival, the gunmen had disappeared.
“On enquiry, eye witnesses clustering around told policemen that the gunmen were in Police uniforms and had operated in a commercial bus.
“The victim, one Mr Korie, driving in a Toyota Highlander, died on his way to the hospital.”
According to her, when the information filtered in, the state Commissioner of Police, Mr Umar Manko, ordered that the assailants be fished out.
She said this was with a view to knowing their identities, particularly as they were alleged to have operated in police uniforms.
“In recent time, gunmen operating in military and police uniforms have been involved in one violent crime or the other and the Lagos State Command is not leaving any stone unturned in dealing decisively with any fake uniformed officer.
“The Commissioner of Police hereby appeals to members of the public, especially the victim’s family, to remain calm and embrace peace, as the perpetrators of this dastardly act must be brought to book.”
