Gunmen Kill 4 Policemen in Yobe Station Attack

BARELY two days after 4 officials in the neighboring Borno State were waylaid and killed execution style by gunmen who still remain on the run, four policemen have been targeted and killed in Yobe State.

The men struck in the early hours of Thursday, killing the four policemen near their station in Babangida, the headquarters of Tarmuwa Local Government Area.

Police Commissioner in the state Sanusi Rufai said that the policeman were attacked as they took guard behind the sand-bags which served as security barriers at the station entrance.

Five of the gunmen who staged the attack were however killed in the ensuing firefight.

According to Rufai, the gunmen who came with the intention of killing policemen and burning down the station, made away with police ammunition, including rifles.

“The gunmen came around midnight trying to enter the police station with an intent to burn it down, but were resisted by the police.

“We lost four policemen and their rifles were carted away but the station was protected,” Rufai said

The brutal attacks continue even as the President Goodluck Jonathan government deliberates on the possibility of granting amnesty to the bloodthirsty militants across the northern region of Nigeria.

President Jonathan recently commissioned a committee to look into the possibility of granting amnesty to the militants, who have killed hundreds of Nigerians in the past 3 years, a move that continues to attract its share of criticism from the public.
