
The city of Ibadan is in mourning following the death of its revered monarch, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin, the 43rd Olubadan of Ibadanland.
The traditional ruler died in the early hours of Monday, July 7, 2025, just two days after celebrating his 90th birthday.
Oba Olakulehin ascended the throne in July 2024, following the passing of his predecessor, Oba Moshood Lekan Balogun.
His coronation, which took place on July 12, 2024, was marked by widespread joy and hope for unity and progress in Ibadanland.
The late Olubadan was widely respected for his wisdom, humility, and commitment to the development of Ibadan.
During his brief reign, he worked to foster peace and strengthen the bonds among the city’s diverse communities.
News of his passing has prompted an outpouring of tributes from political leaders, traditional institutions, and citizens.
Many described Oba Olakulehin as a father figure and a pillar of tradition whose legacy will endure.
Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State, who presented the staff of office to the late monarch, expressed deep sorrow at the loss, noting that Ibadan has lost a symbol of unity and cultural heritage.
Oba Olakulehin is survived by his family and the people of Ibadan, who will remember him for his dedication and service.
Funeral arrangements are expected to be announced by the Olubadan-in-Council in line with Ibadan’s customs and Islamic rites.
