ICC Says No to African Trial for Kenyas Deputy President

THE International Criminal Court has rejected the request to hold the trial of Kenyan Deputy President William Ruto in Africa.

Mr Ruto’s crimes against humanity trial will be opened in The Hague, ICC judges said on Monday.

“While in principle in favour of bringing the ICC’s proceedings closer to the affected communities, concluded that the proceedings in this instance shall be held at the ICC’s headquarters,” the court said in a statement, according to Reuters.

The statement added that judges had considered factors including cost and security.

Mr Ruto along with Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta are both accused of organising the deadly clashes that followed a disputed vote five years ago. Ruto had asked that his trial be held closer home.

Mr Kenyatta has made a similar request, but judges are yet to rule on it.
