President Goodluck Jonathan has dissolved the membership of all boards and parastatals of the Federal Government of Nigeria with a cautionary not that the development is more of a routine exercise and must not be views as a measure taken to punish anyone.
Also, in order to douse speculations concerning the weak place of his deputy, Vice-President Namadi Sambo according to President Jonathan is to head what he described as one of the most powerful committees that could reconstitute the dissolved organizations.
Dr. Jonathan said that such dissolutions and re-constitutions often take place as a matter of routine every four years while assuring that the experiences already gathered by the individuals affected would come handy in their future appointment.
According to the President, “Every four years, it is customary that the boards of federal government parastatals and agencies are dissolved. The experience they have acquired these past five years, they will bring it to bear on any other responsibility that they are assigned and we believe they will do the best for this country.”
Noting that the newly inaugurated committee was “the most powerful committee”, the president said, “The dissolution would have been done earlier, but, of course, this is a continuous government and that is why we were not in a hurry to dissolve boards.
“But, of course, we have to review and reposition properly. We are formally inaugurating this committee headed by the vice president, one of the most powerful committees because most senior people from the executive, the legislature and the party (Peoples Democratic Party) are members.
“We believe that you will do this work very quickly. First and foremost, the tradition is to ration it: go to the states and so on and so forth; then, we will now call the state governors for a meeting. After that, compiling of names will take place.”
