Kano Resident, Miko Umaru, Sentenced to Death for 1991 Murder

20 YEARS after he was alleged to have decapitated a woman, Kano resident Miko Umaru was on Wednesday sentenced to death by hanging at a Kano High Court on Tuesday.

Justice Nurudeen Sagir Umar, while delivering judgment, said the court was satisfied with the evidence brought against the accused, over the murder of Hauwa Uwani Alasan.

According to Justice Umar, “I have no discretion, based on section 221 of the penal code, to commute the death sentence. I, thereby, sentence you, Miko, to death by hanging. You shall be hanged until pronounced dead by the authorities concern.”

Justice Umar equally pronounced the second judgment by sentencing him to a five-year imprisonment on the second charge, in accordance with section 219 of the penal code.

The judge said that the convict had the right to appeal if he was not satisfied with the decision of the court.

According to the two-count charge, the convicted, Miko, was said to have murdered Hauwa Uwani Alasan along with two other accused on February 23, 1992 at the outskirt of Kademi Village in Gaya Local Government Area of Kano State.

Miko was said to have strangled and beheaded his victim after hitting her on the head several times.
