Kano’s ‘Hisbah Board’ to Marry Off 1,000 Women

– Told to be Obedient to Husbands, But Independent

NO LESS than a thousand women are set to be married under a government sponsored program on April 7 in Kano State.

Kano is one of the northern states with majority muslim population in Nigeria.

As part of pre-marriage rites organized for the wives –to-be, the board encouraged the prospective couples to strive for their marriage to survive.

This was according to Zahra’u Muhammad, a female deputy commander of the Hisbah Baord, who oversaw the counseling of the women.

According to her, the marital status was solely in their hands and there was need for them to be obedient to their husbands to maintain the relationship.

“We want you to be grateful to this administration by utilizing the opportunity to stay in your marital homes and raise your families with fear of God.”

Zahra’u, however, cautioned them against being too dependent on their husbands.

The special guest at the occasion, Malama Atika Balamaiyafe, called on the women to reciprocate the gesture by staying happily in wedlock.

She warned that women had to maintain their position for their marriages to be successful, noting that when they failed their responsibilities, the marriages usually failed.
