Kwibohora 30: Rwandans in Nigeria celebrates liberation

The Rwanda High Commission in Nigeria on Saturday in Abuja, celebrated its 30th anniversary of liberation known as Kwibohora 30.

The celebration marks the end of genocide and the defeat of the government that executed it on July 4, 1994.

This year’s celebration themed, “Rwanda’s Journey Continues,” signifies that while the nation has made significant strides in reconciliation, justice, economic growth, and social development, the journey towards a prosperous and united nation is far from over.

According to Amb. Christophe Bazivamo, Rwanda High Commissioner to Nigeria, Rwanda recovered its independence on July 1, 1962 but the recovery did not translate into national harmony and cohesion, as all post-independence governments chose to base their rule on ethnicity, divisiveness, and exclusion.

He added that their choice inspired from the colonial master, crystalised in a genocide ideology that built up to the planning and the perpetration of the Genocide Against the Tutsi in 1994.

“We honor the resilience of the Rwandan people and the sacrifices made for freedom, the bravery of the Rwandan Patriotic Army, who rescued countless lives, symbolizes our indomitable spirit.

“We express our deepest gratitude to those who liberated our nation and the heroes who gave their lives for a free Rwanda.

True liberation encompasses healing, reconciliation, and rebuilding.

“Rwanda’s unique approach to justice, emphasizing restorative practices like Gacaca courts and fostering a shared identity through “Ndi Umunyarwanda,” has enabled us to heal the wounds of the past,”he said.

The ambassador added that today, Rwanda is stronger and more united than ever.

“We have rebuilt a nation that values every citizen, with trust and cooperation as cornerstones. Our pact of trust, “igihango,” has been fundamental in fostering unity and driving our progress.

“Our journey has not been easy, but we have achieved remarkable progress, our security forces, once symbols of oppression, are now guardians of peace, earning the trust and respect of the Rwandan people through their dedicated service.

“We have made significant strides in reducing poverty, improving healthcare and education, and empowering women. Our economy is growing at an average annual rate of 7%, and Rwanda is now a leading investment destination in Africa.

“I invite you to #VisitRwanda with #RwandAir to experience our beauty, wildlife, and rich culture. For investors, Rwanda offers a wealth of resources and support, with a government dedicated to creating a conducive business environment.”he added.

Bazivamo also noted that collaborations with nations around the world, including Nigeria, have been instrumental in Rwanda’s journey to growth.

“We are grateful for the partnerships that have supported our development, and we are committed to deepening these relationships.

“I wish to highlight that our shared values and mutual goals align perfectly with Nigeria’s diplomacy focus – Development, Democracy, Demography, and Diaspora – and we look forward to continued collaboration that benefits both our nations,” the ambassador said.

Nigeria’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Amb. Yusuf Tuggar, congratulated the people of Rwanda for their liberation and growth over the past 30 years.

Tuggar who was represented by Amb. Safiu Olaniyan
reiterated Nigeria’s commitment to partner with Rwanda and strengthen bilateral relations between the two countries.

Newsspecng reports that 2 people at the event won free Economy and Business air tickets to and fro Rwanda through a lucky draw during the celebration event.
