The Attahiru Jega-run Independent National Electoral Commission on Wednesday effected the retirement and redeployment of 20 directors at its headquarters in Abuja, leaving only 6 unaffected.
The affected directors were either moved to positions lower than the previous positions they occupied or outrightly retired, according to sources at the Commission.
The reorganization comes amid growing challenges, long ahead of the 2015 general elections, an election that has been giving rise to developments in recent weeks.
The formation of a new political organization, the All Peoples Congress, has thrown the Commission into the limelight following the debate over who has the more authentic claim to the acronym, APC, between the political organization and its rivals.
Charges and countercharges were made about the complicity of the Commission in the acronym saga, forcing the Commission to issue a strong denial to what it identified as falls charges.
It is unclear if Wednesday’s reorganization has anything to do with the tussle over the APC acronym.
The affected directors with two years left in service were reportedly advised to retire with full entitlements or be redeployed to lower offices, an offer which some had rejected under the threat of court action.
