The minister stated this Tuesday at the 2018 Legislative-Stakeholders conference on Cybersecurity under the theme, Cybersecurity: Implications of Disruptive Technologies on National Security and Economy held at the NAF Centre Abuja. The Minister gave the example of cyber attack on Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, JAMB in Abuja last year where the National Information
Technology Development Agency, NITDA came to the rescue as a typical case of Nigeria’s capability to ward off such threats.
Throwing more light on some of the cybercrimes, Shittu said “transnational criminal networks have become increasingly complex and sophisticated. Cryptic currencies are being used to pay for illicit goods and to fund terrorism. The dark net allows horrific child exploitation as well as arms and drug dealing”.
Another serious issue accorting to the Minister is people using the internet to incite the public against the government and vice versa. He said the Ministry will work with the office of the National Security Adviser, NSA and the National Identity Management Commission, NIMC to deal with cybercrime threat.
Senator Costa Ogola, vice chairman Senate Committee on ICT and Cybersecurity in his remarks said Cybersecurity is not only about computer and data but a national security issue.
President of the Senate, Senator Abubakar Bukola Saraki who declared the conference open said the National Assembly will work with other stakeholders to make Nigerian cyber space safer. He was represented by Senator Gumel.
