MMA Customs Nab China-Bound Man with $355,685 Cash

CUSTOMS officials stationed at the Murtala Mohammed Internal Airport in Lagos intercepted a man who tried boarding an international flight on Wednesday with $355,685 cash in his possession.

Although the suspect declared the monies at the point of departure, customs officials say he was unable to convincingly state his source of the money.

The public relations office of the airport command of the Customs Service, Thelma Williams, confirmed the arrest to journalists on Thursday.

Mrs. Williams did not state the name of the suspect.

“At about 20:35 hour of April 24, one intending passenger with Emirate Airline Flight Ek782 to China, was arrested with that sum of foreign currency,” she said.

According to Ms. Williams,  after the money was physically counted, it was discovered to be 317,300 dollar as against  355,685 dollars earlier declared  by the passenger.

She added that the suspect remains in the custody of the Service, and that he would be handed over to the relevant officials of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission for investigation and progression if the need
