A PASSENGER at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport in Lagos was apprehended on Tuesday for traveling with undeclared funds of over half a million dollars.
Identified by customs operatives station at the airport as Mr. Apampa Adeshina, the United Arab Emirates-bound passenger who booked his flight with the Emirates Airline had in his possession the sum of 540,000 dollars.
The public relations officer of the airport command of the Nigeria Customs Service, Thelma Williams, confirmed the report to journalists on Tuesday.
Williams said the man was arrested for failure to declare the actual amount on him and his inability to convince the relevant government agencies at the airport about the source of the foreign currency he was travelling with.
According to Williams, the passenger, carrying an international passport with number AO3445111, had been handed over to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission for further interrogation and investigation.
She said that Adeshina was arrested at the currency declaration desk of the Nigeria Customs Service at the l Airport.
Adeshina is the second passenger arrested at the point of departure of the same international airport in the last month. Another passenger was caught with over a million dollars in undeclared money as he tried to depart Nigeria.
