The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) on Monday announced the arrest of a pharmacist who allegedly used forged NAFDAC documents to import pharmaceuticals from India.
NAFDAC’s Director of Enforcement, Dr Garuba Macdonalds, told journalists in Lagos that the suspect, names withheld, was arrested last week with the forged documents.
Macdonalds said the suspect, a member of the Pharmaceutical Association of Nigeria, had used the forged documents to import pharmaceutical products such as Pacsone and Maitidine injections.
He added that NAFDAC notification of registration letters for Azithromycin, Pacsone Dexamethasone, Pacmai extra capsules and Sugarita granules were also found in the suspect’s car.
“During the course of investigation, seven bank drafts in favour of NAFDAC, totalling N2.5 million which were never paid to the agency, forged NAFDAC payment booklets and letter headed paper were also found,’’ he said.
According to him, the suspect has admitted to forging the documents without the knowledge of the company he represents.
He said the suspect would be handed over to the police for further investigation and prosecution.
The suspect, who was paraded at the briefing, however, declined any comment.
