The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Lagos State Command, seized 10.6 tonnes of assorted hard drugs in 2011, its commander, Mr Aliyu Sule, said on Friday.
Sule said in an interview in Lagos that the seizures were an increase on the 6.1 tonnes it made in 2010.
He listed cocaine, Indian hemp and Diazepam as some of the drugs seized by the Command..
The commander said that some seizures of cocaine were recorded outside airports in the country, unlike in the past when they were mainly detected at the point of boarding aircraft.
Sule said that the strategies put in place by the command to reduce production and distributions of hard drugs were yielding fruits.
He cited the discovery of warehouses where drugs were kept by the dealers in the state as one of the breakthroughs of the command.
Sule said that the command also detected a laboratory where Meta-Amphetamine, a psychoactive drug, was being manufactured locally in Iba Local Council Development Area of the state, for export to Asian countries.
Speaking on arrests, the NDLEA boss said that the Command arrested 240 suspects in 2011 as against 225 in 2010.
He said that 113 drug traffickers were convicted in 2011 as against 101 in 2010.
The commander noted that hard drugs were never scarce in Lagos because of the sophisticated nature of the network being run by the syndicate.
Sule urged the state government to assist the command with additional operational vehicles to increase the patrol of suspected areas of drug supply and distribution.
He said that with adequate support, the command would cut off supply of drugs in the state.
