Nestlé for Healthier Kids (N4HK) Nutrition Quiz Competition has been launched in the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, with 10 schools participating across the six Area Councils in the FCT.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the competition was inaugurated on Tuesday, in Kuje Area Council, organised by Nestle Nigeria in collaboration with Ministry of Health, Education and Nutrition Society of Nigeria.
Mrs Edidiong Peters, Public Affairs Specialist of the company said N4HK incorporates school-based nutrition education programme, which equips children to enable them make better nutrition decisions from an early age for a healthier future.
According to her, Nestlé for Healthier Kids (N4HK) is the company’s flagship initiative which aims to help 50 million children globally lead healthier lives by 2030 and beyond.
“The Nutrition Quiz therefore is a core part of the N4HK programme to enhance recall and retention of lessons learnt by the students.
“The competition is also aimed at helping the children know if they are able to retain and recall what they have been thought in the school before the practice.
“Through activities like the Nutrition Quize, we make progress toward our goals of helping children live healthier lives by raising awareness of the benefits of healthy eating and active lifestyles.
“Therfore there is a need to teach children about nutrition from an early age in school and at home so that they can have a healthier future,” she said.
On her part, Dr Florence Uchendu, the Chairperson, Nutrition Society of Nigeria FCT Chapter said the rate of malnutrition among children was high in the country, hence the need for the awareness was paramount.
Uchendu said Nestlé Nigeria has been championing the course of teaching the children all about Nutrition and healthy eating for a healthier future.
“Our aim of this competition is to access what the teachers have taught them, if they have been thought well and if the children are also learning.
“At the end of this competition, we will have the best of schools to compete in the final and it will show the lessons they are learning in their schools.
“We also want to catch them young because at the end of the day, they will go home and tell their parents what we have thought them so that they eat healthy meals to reduce malnutrition, ” she said.
NAN reports that UBE Paseli in Kuje Area Council and Jiwa primary school under Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC) won the first round of the quiz competition held in Kuje.
Fostina Ofon, a student of UBE Paseli said she was optimistic her school will win the Nestlé for Healthier Kids quiz competition at the final. (NAN)
