NGO advocates gender equality, inclusion in electoral processes

The Abiodun Essiet Initiative for Girls (AEIG) has called for gender equality as well as social inclusion of all Nigerians, in the forthcoming general elections.

Mrs Abiodun Essiet, Executive Director, AEIG, gave the call at a town hall meeting on Gender Equality and Social Inclusion, at the Abaji Area Council of the FCT.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the event has as theme; “Raising Awareness on Violence Against Women in Politics During Electoral Processes”.

Essiet said that the meeting is aimed at raising awareness on violence against women in particular during elections, as all Nigerians should be allowed to participate in the democratic process of the nation.

“Everyday, women suffer violence in public life and it is even worse for those who are actively involved in the political process.

“The form of violence they suffer ranges from physical, psychological and sexual.

“This meeting is aimed at encouraging the participants to be politically accommodating, especially to women.

“They should learn and respect the political views and inclination of others and disagreements should not result to violence,” she said.

The executive director also called on the judiciary, as well as law enforcement agencies to ensure that perpetrators of violence against women face the wrath of the law.

For her part, Mrs Josephine Emeghoghena, Project Officer of the organisation, added that the meeting was apt a d germane as the general elections draws closer.

“We want you all to know that your wives, sisters and mothers have the right to vote and also ensure you protect them when they go out to cast their votes.

“We also want to plead with men not to force the women to vote against their choice, let them vote their conscience,” she added.
