Nigeria Police Boss In Appoints Garba as Ikeja Police College Chief

INSPECTOR-General Mohammed Abubakar of The Nigeria Police, has approved the appointment of Mr. Yahaya Garba, a

Commissioner of Police, as Commandant of the Premier Police College in Ikeja, Nigeria.

A statement from the office of the new commandant, Mr. Garba, signed by college spokesman Samuel Jinadu, said that Garba was previously the commissioner in charge of research and planning at the Police Headquaters in Abuja.

Garba has since taken over from the former Commandant, Ibrahim Yerima, who was redeployed to the Eastern Port Authority Command in Rivers.

The Police College in Ikeja, the oldest police training facility in the country, became the center of attention last year when a report done by a Lagos-based television outfit, Channels TV, revealed the site to be in a state of squalor. Amenities at the college were neglected, even as police recruits continued to be sent to the base for training.

The attention generated by the condition of the police college ultimately caught the attention of President Goodluck Jonathan, who made an unscheduled stop at the site to see the state of affairs at the venue for himself. Mr. Jonathan thereafter promised to do something about the facility. Recently, Inspector-General Abubakar visited the site to see the progress of rehabilitation work carried out at the site.

Mr. Abubakar was accompanied by Major-General Funsho Owonubi, the army commandant for works, who said that the work at the police college was at 90% completion. He also said that work at the site is expected to be completed within the next two weeks
