Nigeria, United States Plan Exchange of Presidential Visits – Ashiru

THURSDAY’s meeting between the United States Secretary of State John Kerry by and his visiting counterpart from Nigeria, Foreign Minister Gbenga Ashiru discussed modalities of facilitating an exchange of visits between President Goodluck Jonathan and President Barack Obama.

This was according to Mr. Ashiru, who disclosed this during an interactive session with journalists in Washington D.C. on Thursday, at the conclusion of a closed-door meeting with Mr. Kerry.

“I was able to brief (Secretary Kerry) on the development in Nigeria, on what we are doing to revamp the economy, to reposition all the strategic sectors, agriculture, power, energy, petroleum, transportation and development of infrastructure in the country.

“And that we are doing very well, our program is on course and I also expressed thanks to him for what they (U.S.) are doing, the investment flowing into the country from the USA, especially in agriculture and the power sector.

“All these programmes and investment will help to create jobs for our people in the country, particularly for the teeming youths of our country.”

Ashiru stressed that Kerry noted that Nigeria was a. strategic partner of the United States and that it would continue to support Nigeria in tackling the Boko Haram insurgency.

The foreign minister also said that Kerry described the activities of Boko Haram as challenges that Nigeria must face, adding that the government was doing its best.
