NITDA Moves to Boost Investors’ Confidence, Reviews Domain Names Guidelines

By Dwelleth Morountodun

The Director General of National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), Dr. Isa Ibrahim Pantami, has expressed confidence

that the review of the GOV.NG and MIL.NG policy, which guides the administration of government and military domain names will no doubt boost investors confidence.

The DG, made the disclosure week end in Abuja during the presentation of the reviewed policy to stakeholders, said the review became necessary to ensure that the policy is in conformity with the dynamic changes in the Information Technology (IT) landscape.

He however warned MDAs against using the generic third level domain like the .com as such is not attached to any country and can therefore be subjected to abuses, fraud and illegal activities online.

According to him, the authenticity of the country’s domain name will help boost foreign investors.

He said: “The agency conducted a study and discovered that 75 MDAs were not using the country’s domain names, while so many health centres are still on the third level generic domain name.

Pantami, said the agency has started its sensitization campaign on the importance of the nation’s identity so that MDAs can migrate from the third level generic to the nation’s third level domain generic domain name.

According to him, NITDA has tasked the Nigeria Internet Registration Association (NIRA), to supervise the administration of the third level domain to ensure that more stakeholders are involved in IT activities across the country, adding that the agency is in the process of automating the system so that approvals can be received online
