Occupy Nigeria Protest Turns Violent In South West

– Military, Police Used Tear Gas to Disperse Protesters

In continuation of the ongoing protests over the removal of fuel subsidy by the Nigerian government, cities as Ibadan,

 

Osogbo, Abeokuta in the South west on Wednesday witnessed another round of protest on the cities’ major roads.

In Ibadan, the capital of Oyo State, protesters who had gathered as early as 7am in areas as Mokola, Dugbe, Oke Ado and Molete areas disrupted the free flow of traffic as disused tires were set ablaze in the middle of the roads to prevent movement.

Business places around the affected areas hurriedly closed down for fear of being attacked by the angry protesters who were chanting anti-government songs.

The peaceful protest later turned violent with the arrival of a combined team of military and policemen who used tear gas to disperse the protesters. In the ensuing melee, some of the arrested protesters were beaten and later taken away by the security personnel.

Also reports from Osun, Ogun, Lagos and some other states in the region indicate that security agencies engaged the use of force to disperse protesters.
