The Ondo State government has released N1 billion for the payment of arrears of gratuities of local government workers and primary school teachers who retired in 2012.
The Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Amidu Takuro, stated this on Saturday while speaking to reporters in Akure.
Mr Takuro said the gesture was a continuation of the gradual defrayment of gratuity arrears for retired local government officers and primary school teachers.
The commissioner said that the payment, which would be the second batch, would commence on July 9.
“Being a government that is sensitive to the plight of the people, the Aiyedatiwa-led administration has decided to pay the gratuities of retirees en bloc rather than paying piecemeal,” said Mr Takuro.
The commissioner said immediate past Governor Rotimi Akeredolu paid the first tranche of gratuities arrears last year.
“In continuation of this good work, His Excellency, Hon. Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa, has decided not only to continue in this trend but to make it quarterly.
“Governor Aiyedatiwa has been alive to his responsibilities as regards payment of pensions, salaries of workers and other entitlements,” he stated.
The commissioner urged retirees and serving civil servants to support the Lucky Aiyedatiwa-led administration.
