Oyo State Commissioner of Police, Johnson Adenola, has pledged to ensure justice for the killing of 13-year-old Kehinde Alade, a SS1 student, by a stray bullet fired by a police officer.
Adenola stated this at a joint press conference which also had in attendance, the State Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Prince Dotun Oyelade, and the Chairman of the Oyo State Road Transport Management Agency (OYRTMA), Major Adekoya Adesagba (rtd.).
The News Agency of Nigeria had reported that Kehinde Alade was tragically killed by a stray bullet fired by a police officer in Alakia Adegbayi road, Egbeda Local Government Area, Ibadan, during a joint operation with the Oyo State Traffic Management Authority (OYTMA), on Tuesday, May 20, 2025.
Adenola, who called for a minute of silence in honour of the deceased, disclosed that while an interim report on the incident has been prepared, but a comprehensive report requires the father’s testimony, then prosecution will follow.
And that the Inspector General of Police is being kept informed daily.
“On our part, we have picked up the officer who fired that shot and is currently in custody being investigated by deputy commissioner of police, State department of investigation, Iyaganku, together with members of his team.
“After the conclusion of the investigation, appropriate actions will be taken. We are keeping the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, updated on a daily basis,” he stated.
In his remarks, the State Commissioner for Information, Prince Oyelade, assured the public that justice will be served.
The government will heighten sensitisation and awareness campaigns on civic responsibilities and traffic laws.
The government urged the police to increase training on firearm handling and civil engagement.
Also speaking, OYRTMA Chairman Major Adesagba (rtd.) decried the increasing rate of traffic violations and the rising incidents of assaults on his officers during lawful duties.
He added that these attacks necessitated the agency’s request for police support during operations.
He also said that Odunayo Alade is a serial offender, as he had on May 14, 2025, arrested for parking in a no- parking zone, and paid a fine of N15,000 to the purse of Oyo State Government.
He appealed to residents to comply with traffic regulations and other laws, emphasising the need for collective responsibility in maintaining public order. (NAN)
