UNKNOWN gunmen went lose in the northwestern state of Sokoto on Wednesday, trailing a deputy controller of prisons in the state before taking his life under a hail of bullets in his car.
The victim, Usman Gwandu was killed at the SARDA Quarters in the city of Sokoto.
The gunmen subsequently fled the scene of the attack without taking anything from the vehicle in a manner that hints that the official was targeted for elimination.
Reports indicate that the gunmen had trailed the controller to the scene, where they struck around 10:00 p.m.
According to residents of the area, the victim of the attack could not be rescued because gunfire continued for a length of time.
Mr. Gwandu was later pronounced dead at the Usmanu Danfodiyo University Teaching Hospital in Sokoto, where his body was deposited at the morgue.
His remains had been deposited at the hospital’s mortuary.
Hospital sources say his body will be released to his family later Thursday for burial at Gwandu in Kebbi.
The spokesman of the Sokoto State Police Command , DSP. Sani Salisu, confirmed the incident.
Salisu said the command had commenced investigations to unravel those behind the act.
