Prominent Lagos Lawyer, Giwa-Amu, Wins Award

LAGOS-based managing partner of AG Giwa-Amu & Co. Legal Practitioners, Chief Gabriel Giwa-Amu, has emerged the winner of the Distinguished Philanthropist Award 2012. The award is in recognition of Giwa-Amu’s free legal services to indigent prison inmates, among other similar help that he is known to render to Nigerians in need.

An internationally acknowledged philanthropist, Giwa-Amu’s selfless contributions to humanity is cast on a bolder relief for all to see through his tireless drive at ensuring that justice takes its cause, especially as it concerns the downtrodden.

Giwa Amu’s flagship in the legal philanthropy crusade is the Stephen & Solomon Foundation. Founded by the Chief Giwa-Amu, it has secured, over the years, the release of over 500 indigent inmates from across the country through free legal services.

Stephen & Solomon Foundation, as the defender of the defenseless, was inspired by the memory of Giwa-Amu’s late brothers – Stephen I.O. Giwa-Amu, a legal icon of his era and one-time attorney-general and commissioner for justice in the defunct Bendel State (now Edo State), and Brigadier-General Solomon Giwa-Amu, a lawyer and aide-de-camp to former President Olusegun Obasanjo.

Barrister Gabriel Giwa-Amu is a scion of the respected Giwa-Amu family of Sabongida Ora in Owan Local Government Area of Edo State. His father, the late Michael Giwa-Amu was the first Nigerian indigenous police officer, who rose to the rank of Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) during the colonial era.

The African Investment & Development Leadership Award is dedicated to honor select Africans adjudged to have contributed meaningfully to the development of their societies in diverse areas.

Giwa-Amu will receive his award at a ceremony billed to hold on the 17th of October 2012 at the Hyatt Regency Hotel, Atlanta Georgia, USA
