Aminu Tambuwal

The House of Representatives on Thursday directed its Committees on Army and National Security to investigate the alleged abduction of one Capt. Dennis Eke in Abia.

The resolution was sequel to a motion by Rep. Nnenna Ukeje (PDP-Abia) and adopted by the House when put to vote by the Speaker, Aminu Tambuwal.

The committees are expected to report their findings to the House within two weeks.

Moving the motion, Ukeje said Eke, a serving captain with the Nigeria Army, was kidnapped on July 31, by unknown persons while discharging his duty.

According to her, Eke had served Nigeria in many peace missions, especially in Liberia and Sudan.

She said the family of Eke was traumatised due to the abduction.

The lawmaker urged the House to call on the Nigeria Army “to get one of their own,’’ and the relevant committees to investigate the matter.

Rep. Uzo Azubuike (PDP-Abia ) in supporting the motion, said it was imperative that the relevant committee of the House investigated the matter to ascertain the true situation.

“It might be something more that than the abduction. We need to know what is going on.’’

Rep. Emmanuel Jime (PDP-Benue) also supported the motion. He said the committee on army should be mandated to find out what really transpired.

Rep. Benjamin Abohol (ACN-Benue) a retired army officer, said he was optimistic that the army would not abandon their own.

Rep. Rasaq Bello-Osagie (ACN-Edo ) said the issue bothered on institutional integrity, adding that more information was necessary to get to the bottom of the matter.

Rep. Ismail Hussain (PDP-Kogi ) said it was worrisome that an officer of the Nigeria army could be kidnapped and nothing had been done about it.

He urged the committee on army to probe the circumstances surrounding the abduction of the officer.
