Mrs Lucy Fadumila, the Chairman of Sauka Ultra Modern Market has called on President Bola Tinubu, Minister of Federal Capital Territory, Mr Nyesom Wike and AMAC Chairman to provide infrastructure for the market.
Fadumila made the call at an event to declare open the market on Saturday in Sauka Community in Abuja.
She said that the former Minister of FCT, Malam Muhammad Bello facilitated the acquisition of land for the market to become a reality.
She further explained that the women in Sauka were happy at the opening, adding that they have now gotten a place to buy, sell and take care of their children and husbands.
“We are appealing to the Federal Government, and the current Minister of FCT, to make this market truly ulta-modern, because, in the whole of Airport Road, we don’t have any market except this one.
“We need light; we need good road; we need them to come and construct the road so that people can have easy access to the market. Those are things we need.
“We also need the government to bring the price of things down, because, people are not finding things easy. Those that obtained the space for shop are suppose to build, but could not, due to high cost of materials.
“A bag of Cement is now going for ten thousand naira. How can an individual buy five bags of cement for N50,000. And this shop is obtain by a common man/woman, and he or she can’t obtain these materials.
“So, we are also appealing to government to help bring down the prices of these materials.
“There are fresh product here, the market place is secure, we have the police, Civil defence, JTF and Vigilantes here with us, but we want government to give us more police,” Fadumila said.
She said that the market has provisions for over 3,500 shops, adding that there are still more spaces, and people have been coming to obtain shops.
The Market Chairman also called on women and youths in the FCT to come and obtain shops and participate in activities in the market to earn a good living.
She added that, with the market now in operation, women would not be selling by the road side again.
Similarly, the District Head of Gwi Ward in Sauka, Mr Alhassan Yusuf said the market is in need of the assistance of Wike and others.
“We want Wike to send his people to come and look at the market and render whatever help they can. And also, Non Governmental Organisations should come to our aid to develop the market.
“If assisted, it will go a long way to alleviate poverty and unemployment. People will use this market to get their daily pay.
“So we are appealing to NGOs, Wike and the AMAC Chairman to join hands and see that this market is well developed so that shortage of food will be alleviated,” Yusuf said.
News Agency of Nigeria reports that Cultural group entertain guests with dance and other traditional demonstrations.
High point of the event was the cutting of the tape by Yusuf to declare the Sauka Ultra Modern Market open for business activities. (NAN)
