
Tax Justice and Governance Platform has advocated for gender perspective analysis of Nigeria’s informal sectors tax policy and administration, sighting the important roles women play in the payment of tax in Kano State.
Dr Muhammad Mustapha, Executive Director of Dispute Resolution and Development Initiative, has called on the government to critically examine how tax systems impact male and female informal business owners differently, with a focus on equity, efficiency, and access to resources.
While briefing News men at Mumbaiya house, Kano, Dr Mustapha, analysed the role women play in the payment of tax in the informal sectors as very strong and dynamic.
“The gender aspect of tax and taxation is very critical and crucial.”
“If you look at some parts of this country, the role women play is very strong and dynamic.”
“In Kano, we have so many women who are involved in different types of business, and they are paying tax.”
“Our role is to complement efforts of the government educating hourly to taxpayers.”
He called on the government to judiciously utilise the taxes collected from people so that the citizens would see their taxes at work.
On his part, the Public Relations Officer of the Kano Internal Revenue Service (KIRS), Hamisu Musa, praised the platform for its advocacy in educating people on the importance of tax payment.
“The handbook presented has made us learn that we need to identify some figures in our receipts platform by indicating gender.”
“This will make us understand who is paying tax between male and female.”
