Union Bank Employee, Morenike Aribiyi, Docked for N6m Theft

AN EMPLOYEE of Union Bank Plc appeared before a Yaba Magistrates’ Court over an alleged theft of the sum of N6 million belonging to the bank.

39-year old Morenike Aribiyi, a resident of Lagos was hauled before the law court on a two-count charge of conspiracy and stealing.

According to the prosecutor, Assistant Superintendent of Police Felix Ifijen, Ms. Aribiyi abused the privilege of her office as an employee of the bank to commit the offense.

Aribiyi worked at the Ladipo branch of Union Bank.

ASP Ifijen also revealed that the alleged theft by Ms Aribiyi spanned a period of fourteen months, from June of 2011 to August of 2012, where she falsified bank records to facilitate the thefts.

“Ariyibi withdrew the money from the bank without authorization between June 2011 and August 2012, after she had falsified the records,’’ Ifijen said.

The prosecutor noted that the offences contravened Sections 278 and 285 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Lagos State.

Responding to the charges, Ariyibi pleaded not guilty.

In her ruling on the bail application of Aribiyi, the magistrate, Mrs P.A. Ojo, granted her bail in the sum of N500, 000 with two sureties in like sum.

Mrs. Ojo also deferred the hearing of the case until March 14.
