University Don urges students, youths to embrace sciences

Dr Chinedum Ahaiwe, a senior lecturer in the Biological science Department, University of Abuja, has called on students especially the youths to embrace science related subjects for national development of the country.

Ahaiwe made the call during the National Leadership Summit at the University with the theme titled “The Science of Leadership and Administration organised by the Nigerian Association of Science Students (NASS) national body.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the senior lecturer lectured on the topic titled “Engaging The Youths on Strategic Insights In Leadership and Administration For National Development”.

The senior lecturer said that Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics are important to national development as they could enhance the quality of life and future of the youths.

According to him, technology drives every economy, military operations and almost every area of human endeavours, so the future, fate and destiny of the world depend on technology.

“We all know that without science we cannot function properly and what we have been able to do is to teach the students why science is important in leadership and administration.

“I think they were able to understand that you cannot do anything without science in the whole world, science gives and improve our knowledge in everything that we are doing.

“Be it in the banking world, science or art world there is still some element of science, especially in getting to know that a leader works based on data and scientific knowledge,” he said.

Besides, he said the primary purpose of inventing technology is to impact lives and environment through promotion of ideas and innovations of young persons in different walks of life.
He said globally, small and medium scale enterprises contribute largely to the economy and it poses a big threat on any nation’s economy if not attended to.

The guest note speaker, Eng. Mohammed Mubarak Abdulkareem, said the youths need to know that they have potentials within themselves but they need to undergo certain kind of training for national development.

Abdulkareem described the development of ICT culture among children as a crucial and necessary step toward the growth and development of any nation.

Comrade Agbatemiro Rapheal Akintomide, the National President, NASS said Science has been the front runner of every developing country.

According to him, Science cuts accross every sphere of the society, hence the need to invest in Science was paramount for the development of the country.

Akintomide said the summit is aimed at encouraging Nigerian students on the need to key into Science related subjects for national development of the country. (NAN)
