ITUC-Africa condemns racist abuse against Mbappe

By Joan Nwagwu

The African Regional Organisation of the International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC-Africa) has condemned the racist abuse directed at French football captain, Kylian Mbappe, describing it as unacceptable and divisive.

The General Secretary of ITUC-Africa, Joel  Odigie said this in a statement signed and issued to newsmen on Thursday in Abuja.

Odigie said the organisation stood in unwavering solidarity with Mbappe following racist remarks allegedly made by Paraguayan Senator, Celeste Amarilla, during the ongoing 2026 FIFA World Cup.
He said that Africans would not remain silent while one of their own was subjected to racial abuse and discrimination.

“As Africans and people of African descent, we will neither watch in silence nor entertain racial slurs against one of our own,” he said.

Odigie said racism had no place in football, public life or society, warning that those promoting racial hatred threatened the unifying spirit of global sporting competitions.
“Racism has no place in football, public life or society. Those who use race to demean others are the true enemies of football,”he said.

He described the senator’s comments as offensive, dehumanising and unbecoming of anyone entrusted with public office, saying football should unite people across nations, cultures and communities.

Odigie said Mbappe’s African heritage remained a source of pride and inspiration, adding that attacks against him undermined the dignity of millions of Africans worldwide.

“Kylian Mbappe’s African heritage is a source of pride, not a target for hatred. An attack on him is an attack on the dignity of millions,”he said.
He called on sports authorities, governments and international institutions to sustain zero tolerance for racism and ensure accountability for individuals promoting hate before, during and after sporting events.

He also urged stakeholders to protect workers, especially migrant workers, whose contributions remained essential to the successful organisation of major international sporting competitions.

“This protection should also shield workers, especially migrant workers whose behind-the-scene efforts make these sporting events possible,”he said.

Odigie encouraged Mbappe to remain focused and continue inspiring millions through his talent, resilience and commitment to values promoting unity, friendship and human dignity.

“Africa stands with you. Your talent, dignity and resilience speak far louder than the voices of intolerance. Continue to inspire people on and off the pitch,”he said.
