The Benue State Police Command has announced the appointment of DSP Orchia Peter Aondongu as its new Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), following the approval of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, psc(+), NPM.
The appointment was made public in an official statement issued on behalf of the Commissioner of Police, CP Cletus C.N. Nwadiobu, and signed by the outgoing Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Udeme Edet.
The appointment marks a new chapter in the Command’s public communication strategy, with DSP Aondongu expected to strengthen engagement between the Police and the people of Benue State through effective information management, transparency, and proactive media relations.
As the official spokesperson of the Benue State Police Command, the Police Public Relations Officer serves as the primary link between the Police and the public. The office is responsible for disseminating timely and accurate information on security matters, responding to media enquiries, clarifying police operations, addressing public concerns, and fostering public confidence in policing activities.
The PPRO also plays a critical role in promoting community policing by encouraging citizens to report crimes, provide credible intelligence, and partner with security agencies in maintaining law and order.
DSP Aondongu is a graduate of the Nigeria Police Academy, Wudil, Kano State, where he earned a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) degree in Accounting before being commissioned into the Nigeria Police Force as an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) on December 19, 2019.
He has served in several strategic operational and administrative capacities within the Force. His previous appointments include Divisional Crime Officer at Lafia ‘C’ Division and Obi Division, Second-in-Command (2iC) of the Commissioner of Police Crack Squad in Lafia, Patrol and Guard Officer in Kadarko, Deputy Police Public Relations Officer of the Benue State Police Command, and most recently, Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of ‘C’ Division, North Bank, Makurdi.
In addition to his operational experience, DSP Aondongu has undergone specialized professional training, including the Mobile Police Force Combat Operations Course at Ila-Orangun, as well as several strategic media and communication programmes designed to enhance police-public engagement and crisis communication.
Congratulating the newly appointed Police spokesperson, Commissioner of Police CP Cletus C.N. Nwadiobu expressed confidence in DSP Aondongu’s competence, professionalism, and capacity to promote timely, accurate, and transparent dissemination of information while strengthening public trust in the Command.
The Commissioner also appealed to residents of Benue State to continue supporting the Police with timely and credible information that will assist in preventing crime and safeguarding lives and property across the state.
