A Domestic Violence Report – Port Harcourt

A 36 year old woman, Ashionye Nwose, has accused her ex-husband, Umanah Augustine Itoro of prolonged domestic abuse in the Agip Estate area of Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

According to Ashionye, the abuse began during their relationship after she refused to terminate a pregnancy. He absconded as a result of her decision to keep the baby. He showed up prior to her child birth. Although they later got married, she said that Augustine subjected her to repeated physical, emotional, verbal, and sexual abuse, often threatening her life and restricting her movements.

She stated that attempts to leave were met with further violence and abuse including confiscation of her personal belongings and isolation. Despite an earlier family and subsequent Police intervention and a signed undertaking by her husband, the abuse reportedly worsened even as a second baby arrived from the marriage after successful abortions as a result of pressure from Augustine and his mother claiming he was not ready for another baby..

Ashionye eventually fled the marriage in october of 2020 with their two children. Following their divorce in 2024, she claims that her ex-husband Augustine resumed making death threats in 2025 and 2026 after she moved on with her life.

Fearing for her safety, she says she is prepared to report the threats to the authorities for them to take appropriate action against her ex Umanah Augustine Itoro.
