President Bola Tinubu has showered encomiums on the late MKO Abiola, saying that his legacy lives on. Abiola, the acclaimed winner of the 1993 presidential election, died in military detention on July 7, 1998. The embattled Deputy Commis­sioner of Police, Abba Kyari, has been retained in the custody of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) despite being granted N50 million bail. Recall that Kyari was granted the N50 million bail by the presiding judge, Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court sitting in Abuja on Thursday. Kyari, a former head of the Nige­ria Police Response Team (IRT) and two of his siblings were charged before Justice Omo­tosho, after being accused of fail­ing to declare their assets to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA). Rotimi Akeredolu, governor of Ondo, has assured residents of the state that he is on the path to recovery and will return to office soon. Recently, the Ondo house of assembly received a medical leave letter from the governor. The letter explained that Akeredolu would embark on a 21-day medical leave outside of Nigeria’s shores. The Chief of Army Staff, Taoreed Lagbaja, says the Nigerian Army under his watch will stamp out oil theft and pipeline vandalism in the Niger Delta region. Mr Lagbaja gave this assurance during an interactive session with media executives on Wednesday in Ibadan as part of activities marking the 2023 Nigerian Army Day Celebration (NADCEL). “The army will focus on the situation in the Niger-Delta region, just as it will not also lose focus on what is happening in other parts of the country in line with the mandate of the current government,” he said. A Jos Magistrates’ Court on Thursday sentenced a 24-year-old trader , Ahubakar Usman, to eight months imprisonment for stealing a wheelbarrow. The judge, Mr Shawomi Bokkos, summarily sentenced Usman after he pleaded guilty to theft. Bokkos, however, gave the convict an option to pay N50,000 fine and compensation of N12,000 to the complainant. The judge said the punishment would serve as deterrent to other would-be offenders. Earlier, the Prosecution Counsel, Insp Ibrahim Gokwat told the court that the case was reported on June 11, at the “C” Division Police Station by one Clementina Tudun , the complainant. The Federal Government in collaboration with Oyo State Government on Tuesday, inaugurated a new software application National Animal Disease Information System (NADIS) Mobile Application, to track and report animal disease outbreak in Oyo State. This is contained in a statement issued by the Co-ordinating Director, Ministry of Information, Culture and Tourism, Mr. Gideon Alade on Wednesday in Ibadan. NADIS is a platform for the animal health workers to report cases of disease outbreak in their environment. Governor Peter Mbah has threatened to shut down schools and markets observing the one-week sit-at-home order by the self-acclaimed factional leader of the Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB), Simon Ekpa. On Tuesday, Chidiebere Onyia, the Enugu secretary to the state government, stated that the government had been alarmed by Mr Ekpa’s letter to all Igbos on June 14, declaring a total lockdown from July 3 to 10 excluding July 6.
