Yinka Odumakin and the Unfinished Work of Nation Building

So do society view the rather dreary phenomenon called death. But whenever it occurs, either for the youngest or oldest, all express a great "aww", instinctively. The news of the death of one of Nigeria’s most outstanding social critics, civil rights activists and non-conformist, Yinka Odumakin on the night of Friday, 2nd April, 2021, was received by great portions of the society with a deep "oh n...

Rethinking Technical and Vocational Education for the Jobs of the Future

“I feel strongly that we have to have an education system that starts with preschool and goes through college. That's why I want more technical education in high schools and in community colleges, real apprenticeships to prepare young people for the jobs of the future.” Hillary Clinton The future of jobs lies in rethinking what we do now and how we do them, particularly when it comes to education. The prism with which we look at what we tag as education needs to change, and this must happen very quickly. We do not need to re-invent the wheel; all that is required of us is to place less emphasis on ‘education for degree/certificate acquisition’ and ‘embrace education for applicable knowledge acquisition’. Education should be looked at beyond what transpires only within the four walls...

Recent Happenings in America and Lessons for the Developing World, Especially Nigeria

By J.D. EPHRAIM Another take on the American saga is the fact that in spite of its existence for several centuries, even after the abolition of slavery and its trade, the fighting of civil wars, the several amendments to its constitution, the granting of civil liberties and equality before the law, the recognition of the rule of law and not rule by man, in spite of these changes and the advancements that have been made in American history, American society is still struggling with the issue of race. In spite of the fact that America is a country of immigrants(apart from the American Indians ), made up of people of different races, and up to date, there is still a marked difference, based on race, between white Americans on the one hand, and the rest, such as the blacks, Latinos, Asians...
