
The Committee of Provosts of Colleges of Education in Nigeria has initiated moves to revolutionize the country’s Colleges of Education towards attaining academic excellence.This was made known during the Committee’s second annual Conference in Abuja where the conference underscored the need to reposition Colleges of Education as drivers of academic excellence.The Conference which had the theme, “Revolutionizing Nigeria’s Colleges of Education System: Integrating Dual Mandate Skill Acquisition and Entrepreneurship for Educational and Economic Transformation,” underscored the need to reposition Colleges of Education as drivers of academic excellence, skills development, and national economic growth.The Special Guest of Honour at the event and Minister of State for Education, Professor Suwaiba Sa’id Ahmad, described the theme of the Conference as a critical response to the evolving demands of Nigeria’s education sector and honour market.The Minister emphasized that the integration of academic training with practical skills and entrepreneurship is essential for repositioning Colleges of Education as catalysts for both educational excellence and economic growth.Professor Suwaiba believed that the conference would not only enhance the quality of teacher preparation but also equip graduates with the competencies required for self-reliance, innovation, and job creation.She reaffirmed the Federal Ministry of Education’s commitment to strengthening collaboration with the National Commission for Colleges of Education (NCCE) and other stakeholders to ensure the successful implementation of policies that promote skill acquisition and entrepreneurship within teacher education.The Executive Secretary of the National Commission for Colleges of Education (NCCE), Dr. (Mrs) Angela Ajala, also described the conference theme as both timely and relevant, particularly in advancing the integration of academic training with practical skills and entrepreneurship.She noted that this approach is critical to transforming Colleges of Education into dynamic institutions capable of producing innovative and self-reliant graduates, while also promoting educational advancement and driving economic development in Nigeria.The Chairman of the Committee of Provosts, Dr. Ali Adamu, disclosed that the conference theme was deliberately chosen to address the urgent need to reposition Colleges of Education to meet contemporary educational and economic realities.The event featured the unveiling of a festschrift in honour of the immediate past Executive Secretary of the National Commission for Colleges of Education (NCCE), Professor Okwelle Paulinus Chijioke, in recognition of his outstanding service and contributions to the development of teacher education in Nigeria.As part of the activities during the Conference, the Committee hosted a send-forth dinner in honour of the former Executive Secretary NCCE, Professor Okwelle, former and outgoing Chairmen of Committee of Provosts, Professor Faruk and Dr Ali Adamu, as well as 31 exited and exiting Provosts.Professor Francis Adedayo Faduyile, Chairman of the Committee of Chairmen Colleges of Education Governing Councils, said the event was organized in appreciation of the exemplary service of the former Executive Secretary, Chairmen Committee of Provosts and the exited and exiting Provosts.He noted that their contributions had played a significant role in advancing teacher education, particularly within the Colleges of Education system, and expressed optimism that the recognition would inspire serving officers to continue to strive for excellence.End.
