Social Corporate Responsibility, a critical component of corporate governance – PCC

The Public Complaints Commission (PCC) had said that Social Corporate Responsibility (CSR) is a critical component of corporate governance in ensuring the development of the country.

The Commission made this known in Abuja, during a stakeholders workshop to educate the public on their rights and responsibilities regarding CSR compliance in Nigeria.

According to the Commission, some private companies have been found to be non-compliant with CSR obligations, which has resulted in negative impacts on the communities in which they operate.

However, it said the agencies responsible for ensuring compliance with CSR regulations in Nigeria include the CAC, the Federal Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment, NESREA, and PenCom.

“The stakeholders in governance and institutional reform on non-compliance to CSR by private companies in Nigeria include private companies, communities, government agencies, and civil society organizations.

“The ministry ensures that private companies comply with CSR regulations and promotes sustainable business practices.

“The PCC receives complaints from affected communities and investigates them to ensure that private companies comply with CSR regulations.

“The agency seeks to resolve complaints through mediation and conciliation and refers cases to appropriate law enforcement agencies or courts for further action when necessary.

“The PCC also educates the public on their rights and responsibilities regarding CSR compliance and promotes awareness of CSR regulations in Nigeria.

Besides, the agency further revealed that the PCC plays a critical role in addressing complaints from members of the public against non compliance CSR in the county. (NAN)
