SPEAKER ABBAS TAJUDEEN CHAMPIONS BOLD REFORM TO GUARANTEE RESERVED SEATS FOR WOMEN AND PERSONS WITH DISABILITIES

In a decisive push toward inclusive governance, Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Abbas Tajudeen, GCON, PhD, has reaffirmed the 10th Assembly commitment to passing groundbreaking legislation that reserves dedicated seats for women and Persons Living with Disabilities (PLWDs) in both the National Assembly and State Houses of Assembly.

Emphasizing that a parliament is only as strong as the voices it embraces, Speaker Abbas highlighted that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, has officially adopted these historic measures to be transmitted to lawmakers as executive bills.

Speaking during a high-profile engagement with the British High Commissioner to Nigeria, His Excellency Pete Vowles, the Speaker asserted that true national progress remains unattainable while marginalized groups are underrepresented in governance, framing the ambitious legislative initiative as an urgent national imperative.

Underscoring that inclusion must extend beyond promises into actionable laws and institution-building, Speaker Abbas also received Hollywood actor and Guardian Girls International founder, Shin Koyamada, who briefed him on the launch of Guardian Girls Nigeria—a initiative aimed at safeguarding women and girls from gender-based violence through self-defence, education, and empowerment. Uniting legal reform with grassroots protection strategies, Speaker Abbas pledged that the 10th Assembly will continue to operate as a “People’s House” that actively legislates to expand leadership opportunities and protect vulnerable citizens.

By embedding gender and disability rights into Nigeria’s legal framework, the Speaker reiterated his dedication to building an equitable nation where every citizen has a seat at the decision-making table to shape the country collective future.
